Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Cultural events serve as a platform to celebrate heritage, foster community bonds, and promote tourism. Traditional attire plays a pivotal role in these events, symbolizing identity, pride, and continuity of cultural heritage. In Gombe Local Government Area, traditional attire is not only an aesthetic element but also a tool for reinforcing communal values and attracting participation in cultural events. Events like cultural festivals, weddings, and public celebrations often feature traditional garments that reflect the region's rich cultural diversity. According to Adamu and Garba (2024), traditional attire significantly enhances the visual and symbolic appeal of cultural events, making them more engaging for participants and spectators. This study explores the significance of traditional attire in cultural events within Gombe LGA and examines its role in promoting cultural awareness and participation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of cultural events in fostering unity and preserving heritage, their success in Gombe LGA is often limited by insufficient emphasis on traditional attire as a promotional tool. Additionally, globalization and modern fashion trends pose a threat to the preservation of traditional clothing, further diminishing its prominence in cultural events. This study seeks to investigate how traditional attire contributes to the success of cultural events and proposes strategies to enhance its role in promoting cultural heritage in Gombe LGA.
